Frequently Asked Questions about the Ready, Set, Write Program

What is Ready, Set, Write?

It's a program that really helps you get from "I can't start" to "Here I go" by providing a framework and strategies to develop your ideas more fully and start to translate those into content. Here's an almost-silly example: You want to write a story about a penguin, but you don't know where the story is going to go. One of the strategies from Ready, Set, Write asks you to draw your character. Once you start drawing your penguin, certain details come to life. Your penguin is red and green. His one flipper is shorter than the other. And he's the only who can fly.

All of the sudden, ideas start forming, and you have a plot! All of this as a result of drawing your penguin and starting to connect the idea to details.

How does Ready, Set Write work?

Ready, Set, Write is five weeks long. You'll come together with your classmates and trainer once a week on a telebridge. After each session, you will choose four of the forty-one strategies to practice. You'll come back the next week to discuss your experience with your classmates and trainer.

Why is it a teleclass and not self-study?

People typically spend hundreds of dollars on self-study courses, books, and eBooks and usually never read them. If they do read them, they don't apply the knowledge. We hold you accountable to do the work we assign so that by the end of your time with us, you actually have something you can use immediately.

Who should take the Ready, Set, Write Program?

Anyone who wants strategies developing content or has difficulty getting started writing should take Ready, Set, Write. Sometimes the biggest problem people have with writing is how to start. Ready, Set, Write dissolves those barriers and gives you real strategies with which to work. In addition, Ready, Set, Write doesn't just help people who have a hard time getting started on a writing project. Ready, Set, Write strategies help at any point in the writing process, from idea generating to stuck points.

How much time should I plan to spend on homework?

You'll spend one to two hours on homework outside of the class session.

What kind of writing will we be doing?

That's up to you. You'll be given specific strategies that you can try out; it's up to you to come up with the idea to use in the strategy. If you're really struggling to come up with something to play with, we provide writing prompts (questions or statements to spark your thinking).

Will my writing assignments be shared in class?

No. You'll share your experiences with the strategies with the group, but you don't have to share the writing product.

My grammar and writing skills aren’t the best. Will this course be too hard for me?

We're not going to be looking at your writing in this program. We're interested in helping you get started writing. However, if you're wanting to improve your grammar and writing skills, please take a look at our Writing Essentials Program.

Do I need to take notes, or are notes provided?

You'll probably want to record which strategies work for you and your experience with each. You may want to note other strategies and future writing ideas, as we know that these discussions are so inspirational. The Ready, Set, Write Toolbox, our seventy-three page manual, details each strategy as well as provides pages to take notes. You may use the Toolbox in any way you wish.

What if I miss a class? Are the classes recorded?

The classes are not recorded, and we highly recommend that you don't miss a class. Each class builds on the other, and the value of the class lies in the interaction of the group.

Praise for Ready, Set, Write

I have not overcome my inhibitions to writing; I have "grown above" my inhibitions to writing. Dawn made her class a safe and comfortable environment for her students to fully express themselves, to release the creative juices, to get them flowing. Just thinking about her love in wanting you to blossom as a writer and her expectations of you because she knows you can do it, gives you a greater ability to trust in yourself and write well. Thank you, Dawn. ~ Desiree Thompson, West Vancouver, British Columbia

I recently took one of Dawn Goldberg's Ready, Set, Write courses. In my
case, I went into the course having started on a novella years ago, and
wanting to start on an eBook. In both cases, I wasn't writing enough, nor
often. By week 3 of Ready, Set, Write, I was not only writing more often,
but also with renewed energy and confidence. I'd never really strategized
before; I just wrote. The strategies Dawn made available were hugely
valuable, and in fact I'm using some of them now as I tackle my eBook. ~ Rob Neilly, Toronto, Ontario

Ready, Set, Write was a liberating playful experience. Class homework needs to be called "playtime." I had no idea so much could be accomplished in only an hour a week. Dawn's tips, tools, and presentations were topnotch and immensely helpful to my writing journey. ~ Laura Allen, Ocala, Florida

I took RSW because I have a biography to write that has taken me two years to get done. It's not a long biography, but I've struggled with trying to figure out what direction to take. Well, thanks to WWU's RSW class, not only was I able to narrow down my focus through the exciting strategies, I learned that pre-writing can be fun and it is definitely useful. (I'll never skip this step again.) My writing feels more concise and to the very point I was trying to convey. I have a newfound fondness for pre-writing thanks to the RSW Toolkit and my classmates. Now, I'm eagerly seeking out my next writing project! ~ Antonette Artiz, Waldorf, Maryland
