I write all business stuff. How can voice be important there?

Just because it's business writing, doesn't mean that there is no voice. You need to know what an appropriate voice for business writing would be. There still may be call for your personality to show through (think marketing materials and proposals).

How does Writing Your Voice Alive work?

You'll meet with your trainer and classmates once a week for six weeks via telebridge technology. (See the glossary to the right for a more in-depth explanation of the technology behind the Writing Your Voice Alive program.) You'll read and evaluate how writers establish voice in their writing. You'll write to explore voice in writing and establish your own. You'll interact with your classmates and trainer to more rapidly move forward in your growth as a voice-full writer.

Each week you'll have reading assignments and writing exercises. Your trainer will provide ongoing feedback and support on your writing exercises you turn in.

How much time should I plan to spend on homework?

You'll spend two to three hours a week outside of the class session completing the reading assignments and writing exercises.

What kind of writing will we be doing?

Much of the writing is creative, meaning from you. While you may have some exercises that focus on business, this isn't a place where you'll write business plans, company reports and memos, or marketing letters. The purpose of Writing Your Voice Alive is to discover your writing voice, what makes your writing yours and no one else's. You don't have to think up writing on the fly, though. Most of the writing exercises are guided, and in some cases you'll be provided with writing prompts.

Will my writing assignments be shared in class?

Yes. You'll be asked to share some of your writing exercises in class so that others can hear your voice. At the same time, you'll hear others' voices in their writing. As a group with your trainer, you will discuss voice and how to bring it alive.

My grammar and writing skills aren’t the best. Will this course be too hard for me?

We're not going to be looking at your writing as far as grammar and style. We're interested in helping you establish voice. However, if you're wanting to improve your grammar and writing skills, please take a look at our Writing Essentials Program.

Do you offer Writing Your Voice Alive as a self-study course?

No. People typically spend hundreds of dollars on self-study courses, books, and eBooks and usually never read them. If they do read them, they don't apply the knowledge. The beauty of the Writing Your Voice Alive program is that we hold you accountable to do the work we assign so that by the end of your time with us, you actually have something you can use immediately.

Do I need to take notes, or are notes provided?

You'll want to take notes on your own as the much what you'll learn comes from the discussion and interaction of the group as well as from your trainer's feedback.

What if I miss a class? Are the classes recorded?

The classes are not recorded, and we highly recommend that you don't miss a class. Each class builds on the other, and the value of the class lies in the interaction of the group.
